Last Night’s Numbers – 1/5/12

Icon SMI Media

Welcome back to Last Night’s Numbers. For those of you who are new to LNN and Hickory-High, last season I quickly recapped each game pulling out a few numbers that I thought were especially interesting. The compressed season this year means more games every night and consequently things are going to look slightly different.

Instead of hitting each game, I plan to identify a handful of notable individual performances. I’ve also added the new feature of looking at some extremely successful five-man lineup combinations. The box score numbers all come from Hoopdata’s advanced box scores. The lineup data is from Popcorn Machine’s Game Flows.

I’m trying something new again, an awkward manipulation of a terrific recap tool developed by Zarar Siddiqi of Raptors Republic. I apologize for the funky formatting, still working on it.

Dwight Howard, C 11-13 FG | 6-14 FT | 20 REB | 2 AST | 28 PTS | +23 | An MVP-type performance by Dwight Howard carried the Magic to a 103-85 win over the Wizards. 5 of his 20 rebounds came on the offensive glass. He finished with an ORB% of 13.8%, a DRB% of 38.2% and a TRB% of 26.5%. His 10-10 performance on shots at the rim more than compensates for his 8 missed free throws.
Blake Griffin, PF 6-11 FG | 8-10 FT | 10 REB | 4 AST | 20 PTS | +2 |Griffin should be sending Chris Paul and Mo Williams a nice box of chocolates for all the helpers he got last night. He went 8-9 from inside of 10ft. with 7 of those made baskets assisted on. Griffin did work at the other end of the floor as well, where 8 of his rebounds came on the defensive glass. He finished with a TRB% of 35.3.
Andrea Bargnani, C 11-16 FG | 6-7 FT | 7 REB | 3 AST | 31 PTS | +22 | Bargnani did what he does best against the Cavs, score. His 31 points came on an 81.2 TS%. He was 3-4 at the rim and 6-10 from beyond 16ft. 7 defensive rebounds, for a DRB% of 20.2, was a nice addition as well.
LeBron James, SF 12-21 FG | 9-11 FT | 8 REB | 13 AST | 33 PTS | +31 | LeBron led the Heat in an absolute decimation of the Pacers. He finished the game with a 63.9 TS%, puffed up by an 8-12 performance on shots at the rim. 7 of his 13 assists went for layups or three-pointers.
