Last Night’s Numbers – 1/13/12

Icon SMI

Welcome back to Last Night’s Numbers. For those of you who are new to LNN and Hickory-High, last season I quickly recapped each game pulling out a few numbers that I thought were especially interesting. The compressed season this year means more games every night and consequently things are going to look slightly different.

Instead of hitting each game, I’ve identified a handful of notable individual performances. You’ll also find some extremely successful five-man lineup combinations. The box score numbers all come from Hoopdata’s advanced box scores. The lineup data is from Popcorn Machine’s Game Flows.

Thanks to Zarar Siddiqi of Raptors Republic for his terrific recap tool, responsible for the new look.

Dwight Howard, C 44 MIN | 12-21 FG | 21-39 FT | 23 REB | 3 AST | 45 PTS | +12 | Howard had one of the most dominating performances of the season. His 45 points came on a 59.0 TS%. He could have had quite a few more points if he hadn’t gone 21-39 at the free throw line. His 23 rebounds game him an ORB% of 18.8 and a DRB% of 44.0.
Greg Monroe, C 40 MIN | 12-16 FG | 8-8 FT | 16 REB | 2 AST | 32 PTS | -9 | Monroe had easily the best game of his young career, regrettably it came in a loss. He scored 32 points on an 82.0 TS%. His 16 rebounds gave him an ORB% of 15.1 and a DRB% 38.2. If it wasn’t for Dwight Howard‘s game, Monroe would have been the player of the night.
Josh Smith, PF 39 MIN | 14-22 FG | 2-6 FT | 13 REB | 3 AST | 30 PTS | +23 | Smith was a monster offensively, with 30 points coming on a 60.9 TS%. He did his damage inside and out, going 7-8 on shots at the rim and 5-9 on 16-23ft. jumpers. Smith also grabbed 13 rebounds for a TRB% of 18.8.
Jon Leuer, F 32 MIN | 6-9 FG | 3-3 FT | 6 REB | 5 AST | 15 PTS | +17 | Leuer continued his run of solid all-around performances in this, his rookie season. His 15 points came on a 72.9 TS%. He was 3-3 at the rim and 3-5 from beyond 10ft. 4 of his 6 rebounds came on the offensive glass, giving him an ORB% of 15.8. All 5 of his assists went for layups or three-pointers.

Howard did do awesome, but let’s be honest it’s really not that special of a performance. 20/20, yea, very good, always is. But, when you’re being covered by David Lee, a bad defender on PFs, with mostly man coverage the entire night and with Mark Jackson employing the hack-a-howard, the points are quite a bit inflated. Howard’s not as polished offensively as nearly all of the all-time great centers, but even he can exploit Lee fairly easily.
