A Full Season of Top Plays

Everyone loves top plays – fact. Admit it, even if you were removed from the womb to hate the Lakers, the hair on the back of your neck stands up and your heart rate increases when the clock ticks down to zero and Kobe launches a 20-foot fadeaway that splashes through the net. It’s hard not to feel the emotion of those moments. If I could pose the question to you, what was the … Continue reading
Weekly Stats Recap

For this week I decided to chart the importance of turning turnovers into points. In the 52 games this week, the winning team scored 18.12 points per game off of turnovers while losing teams managed just 14.02 points. That may not seem like much, but when you consider that 17.31% of the games this week either went to overtime or were decided by four or fewer points, the ability to score points off of … Continue reading
What Happens at 7:07 PM

Back in the day when I was still a capable guard and ballin’, my center and I would orchestrate a method before tip-off to snag the first possession. I would stand outside the circle, and as the referee tossed the ball into the air, my center would intentionally graze the ball, barely touching it. The opposing center would easily tip it back, but I would rush into our opponent’s side, jump, and grab the … Continue reading
Weekly Stats Recap
For this week’s #StatStudy, basketball coach/guru @C1ayMitche11 questioned an offense predicated on launching three pointers and chasing down the loose ball was an effective strategy in the NBA. He estimated that 60% of teams that won the rebound battle and attempted more triples would win the game and that the number would rise to a 75% success rate if the team tallied more offensive rebounds and 3PA. Our sample size this week was 54 … Continue reading

But before we dive into the week’s oddities, let’s determine how important the distribution of assists is to a team’s success rate. Jared Dubin (@JADubin5), the founder of HoopChalk and Co-EIC of Hardwood Paroxysm, was curious as to the impact of having many good distributors. To answer this question, I charted the number of … Continue reading
Weekly Stats Recap

For this week’s study I took a look at how often (and by how much) winning teams lost individual quarters. For the 52 games played this week, the victorious team lost an average of 1.2 quarters per game. This indicates that more winning teams lost at least two quarters than winning teams that won/tied every quarter. In quarters in which the eventual winner was outscored, they were outscored by an average of 4.97 points. … Continue reading
Video Playbook: Jeff Teague’s Developing Playmaking

Even with last night’s loss to Miami, the 12-6 Atlanta Hawks have been one of the biggest early-season surprises. They have the league’s eighth best Net Rating this season, third best in the Eastern Conference. New additions Kyle Korver, Lou Williams, Devin Harris, Anthony Morrow and DeShawn Stevenson have gotten most of the attention; but the development of point guard Jeff Teague has been one of the biggest driving forces. Like many of the … Continue reading
Daily Dribble for December 10, 2012

The Daily Dribble is a somtimes-daily feature here at Hickory-High. Matt Cianfrone offers his thoughts on a handful of the previous night’s NBA games, and then turns to Twitter to fill in the gaps. This was a pretty fun night of basketball, at least in two of the three games I caught parts of. Heat 101 – Hawks 92: The Heat defense is just so much better with Joel Anthony in the game. He … Continue reading
