This week I had a stat request from Jesse Silverman (@JesseBeau), a Cortland intramural champion and defending March Madness king. He wondered if the number of double digit scorers was directly correlated to victories, guessing that winning teams would have more double digit scorers in each game. This week’s study was done to determine what position led the winning team in scoring with the most frequency. For all 53 games this week I recorded the position of the highest scoring player on the winning team and the percentage of his teams points he scored. I charted the fast break points and interior points for each of the 49 games this week and broke them into two separate groups: winning and losing teams. This week I decided to study the connection between a high scoring starting unit and winning games. In order to do this, I simply recorded the total number of points scored by each starting five and found the average for winning teams and losing teams. There were 50 games this week, providing a decent sample size. The starters of winning teams averaged 72.48 points while the losing team’s starters tallied an average of 61.88 … Continue reading
