All By Myself

So far, the hero of the NBA playoffs opening day is Carmelo Anthony who scored 36 points, leading his Knicks to an 85-78, Game One victory over the Boston Celtics. Knicks’ fans can begin rolling their eyes now, but I’d like to point out that Anthony needed 35 offensive possessions to cobble together those 36 points. Criticizing Anthony for freely spending offensive possessions in the passionate pursuit of points has become old hat, and in looking through … Continue reading
Weekly Stats Recap

With a short week and reserves aplenty, we took a week off from the Stat Study. Here are the stats you missed and trends that were ignored from the past seven days in the Association. Tuesday – In the last three weeks, Jimmy Butler has taken at least 10 shots on seven occasions. The Bulls are 2-0 when he does it against a playoff team with wins over Brooklyn and Miami, but are only … Continue reading
Weekly Stats Recap

This week I decided to take a look at the impact of free throws on the final outcome. Is getting to the line more important than taking advantage of the freebies when a team gets there? During a 54 game sample, I recorded the free throws attempted and the free throw percentage for every team. Winning teams shot an average of 77.1% on 21.9 free throws per game while losing teams made 76% of … Continue reading
Weekly Stats Recap

This week’s Stat Study was done with the intention to determine the impact of playing a back to back in terms of total shooting percentage (TS%) and turnover rate (TOR). To understand this study, one must be familiar with these metrics. Total shooting percentage created a total metric of shooting accuracy looking at three-pointers, two-pointers and free throws. Turnover rate is a simple tally of the percentage of possessions that end in a turnover. … Continue reading

Thanks to the All Star Break, we’ve got a Weekly Stats Recap with 43% more stats for you to enjoy. But before we dive into the week’s oddities, let’s determine how important the distribution of assists is to a team’s success rate. Jared Dubin (@JADubin5), the founder of HoopChalk and Co-EIC of Hardwood Paroxysm, was curious as to the impact of having many good distributors. To answer this question, I charted the number of … Continue reading
Weekly Stats Recap

This week I thought I’d take a look at the shot taking/making of offenses “at the rim” and behind the arc. Theoretically, offenses work hard to get a good look from one of these spots on very possession, and I was curious which had a greater impact on the game. My hypothesis was that winning teams would have the consistent edge “at the rim” while the three point shooting would be something of a … Continue reading
Fridays With Fenrich: Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Roads

Fridays With Fenrich is a weekly feature here at Hickory-High, the aggregation of an extended, week-long email conversation on a single basketball theme, between myself and Kris Fenrich of Dancing With Noah. Ian: We’re rapidly approaching the half-way point of this NBA season. What are a few of your favorite moments? Who have you really enjoyed watching? Who makes you change the channel searching for re-runs of the Cosby show? Kris: Favorite Moments – It’s strange, when I think … Continue reading
Game of the Week: Chicago Bulls at New York Knicks

As you might know, I try to limit myself to picking national television games in this space. I like everyone to be able to look out for the things I point out, no matter where they live. One thing that’s lame about that is that the same teams crop up over and over again. I just want you to know that it’s not my fault; blame whomever schedules the games. On that note, I’m … Continue reading
