Rants, References and Revelations

- Ethan Sherwood Strauss is intrigued by the Ekpe Udoh quandry – invisible individual statistical production, paired with some of the best +/- numbers on the team. I’d like to point out that the Troy Murphy quandry, which is the exact opposite situation, was the original impetus for Hickory High.

- Aaron McGuire of Gothic Ginobili, picked his Eastern Conference All-Stars for the first quarter of the season. Anyone else brave enough to put Brandon Jennings on their ballot?

- The San Antonio Spurs are set to retire Bruce Bowen’s jersey, another reminder that they’re an organization that recognizes talent in all shapes and sizes.

- Things are getting increasingly grim in New York and hope appears to have caught the Chinatown bus to Philadelphia.

- Beckley Mason, on the stretch four as the scalpel needed to slice apart a defense.

- Mike Brown, assuming he lasts for the next few seasons, has the unenviable task of guiding the Lakers through the twilight of Kobe Bryant‘s career. This means subtle but steady changes to both their offensive system and the mindset of the roster. The Lakers appear to be on the road to making those changes, but they’re not quite there yet.

- Roy Hibbert was impressive in the post last Sunday against the Lakers. Teammate Paul George also played some serious defense on Kobe down the stretch.

- Kevin Arnovitz does his best to capture the many facets of Blake Griffin, and of our relationship with him.

- A few weeks ago I linked to Peter Robert Casey’s NBA Social Media Index, an impressively organized list of NBA related twitter accounts. A nice follow-up from Jared Dubin - if you can only follow ten players, here’s your cheat sheet.

- Time for me to check myself, before I wreck myself. Ethan Sherwood Strauss talks about the over-reliance on defensive stats from mySynergySports, a crime of which I’ve been guilty a time or two.

- If your opinion on Monta Ellis is mostly predicated on looking at stats and reading blog posts, you’re missing a whole lot in the aesthetic department.

- Four Factors, the Celtics’ version.
